Student Services: Library, Career Center, Advising, and A/V

In early November, UMBC celebrates National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) with a series of lunchtime conversations. Our theme, Life in a Hybrid World - Learning How to Flex, celebrates all the successes and challenges our campus community has experienced as we continue to adapt, teach, and learn together during the pandemic.

Join us on Wednesday, November 10th from 12PM - 1:00PM ET for a panel discussion on Student Support and Services. We will be joined by our guests from the Career Center, Library, Advising, and DoIT Audio/Video Services, to share their perspectives of how the pandemic has impacted and transformed their work.

Wednesday’s NDLW Panelists:

Ken Baron

Dr. Ken Baron is currently Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Advising and Student Success at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). In his 14th year of service at UMBC, he leads and manages academic advising practices as both an administrator and a practitioner. Before coming to UMBC, Dr. Baron held diverse leadership positions at various institutions, including Emory University, The College of New Jersey, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the American InterContinental University in London (now Regents University). Dr. Baron received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Educational Studies at the University of Surrey, Guildford, England, where a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship supported his graduate study and research on the Nature of American Academic Advising in the 21st Century. Dr. Baron also holds four professional counseling certifications sponsored by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE).

Danielle Brown

Danielle works as an AV Coordinator for the Division of Information Technology (DoIT), where her primary responsibilities include AV system design and engineering, control system programming and user interface design, and AV project management. In the last 5 years, Danielle has designed a number of distance learning solutions for UMBC, including mobile solutions for continuing education and hybrid events, classroom systems for instructors teaching students abroad and at home, and many smaller ad-hoc systems. During the pandemic, Danielle helped engineer and install hybrid-flexible (hyflex) designs in standard classrooms, active learning classrooms, and lecture halls.  

Monique Ransom

Monique Ransom is the Associate Director for Academic Advisor Development and Student Transition Programs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She is currently responsible for coordinating advisor training and development programs for UMBC’s advising community and supporting efforts to implement pre-transfer advising initiatives for prospective transfer students. She currently serves as the Maryland Liaison for the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Monique is an advocate for student success and enjoys empowering students by encouraging them to achieve their academic and career goals.

Christine Routzahn

As Director of UMBC's Career Center, Christine oversees the development and delivery of internship, career exploration and professional programs for UMBC students and alumni.  She has a proven record of successfully developing, coordinating and promoting new programs and establishing strong relationships with students, employers, faculty and academic programs. Christine currently serves as an active board member of the Maryland Career Consortium. She is passionate about helping others see their career potential and inspiring students to take action to achieve their career goals.

Katy Sullivan

Katy Sullivan works as Head of Reference & Instruction at the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery at UMBC. In this role, she oversees research support services, library instruction, and the subject librarian program. She holds an MLS from the iSchool at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research and teaching interests include critical media and information literacies.
